Petrol Pumps Racket: UP Police registers 7 FIRs, arrests 23 people

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Police on Friday arrested 23 people and registered FIRs against 7 people in connection with the raids conducted at 7 petrol pumps in Lucknow.

During the raids, it was found that a remote controlled chip was used in fuel dispensing machines to cut the flow of fuel by 5 to 10 per cent.

A team of Uttar Pradesh STF was working to bust the petrol pump racket ever since it got a tip off in 2016. In 2017, they came to know about Ravinder, an electrician, believed to be the link to the entire racket. He used to install the chips to tamper with fuel dispensing machines.

During quizzing, Ravinder informed that he used to charge Rs 3000 to Rs 40,000 to install chips in the fuel dispensing machines.

How customers were duped?

- Only measurement department officers are allowed to open the plastic box in the machines where this chip is placed.

- Petrol Pump owner would lodge a complaint to measurement department about improper functioning of the machine.

- Once the measurement department breaks the seal of the machine, Ravinder used to insert the chip.

- Each chip carries a special code and was operated through a remote.
