Nirbhaya gangrape convict Vinay Sharma attempts suicide, condition critical

According to the jail officials, the incident took place at about 2300 hours when the convict allegedly took some poisonous pills and tried to hang himself with a piece of cloth. Sharma was immediately admitted to hospital at 2400 hours after the jail authorities came to know about it.

“His condition is not stable yet,” said the authorities.

Another convict had ended life, Vinay Sharma requested more security:

• Another convict of the Delhi gangrape, Ram Singh, had committed suicide in year 2013. He was one of the six men who were convicted for the crime. Singh was driving bus in which the girl was killed.
• “Last year, in 2015, Sharma had demanded more security inside the jail alleging that he was being assaulted by other inmates,” stated the officials.

Delhi gangrape case:

• Six people including a juvenile had, on December 16, 2012, gangraped and killed a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus. The woman died in a Singapore hospital on December 29, 2012 during her treatment.
• The Delhi High court had convicted all the six men and had awarded them death sentence in year 2014. Vinay Sharma along with other convicts had approached the Supreme Court against the HC order but the SC had upheld the order by the trial court.
• Another convict Ram Singh had hanged himself inside Tihar jail in 2013 while the juvenile convict was released in December last after he served three years in a reformation home. The other convicts are serving their jail term.
