IPL 10 RCB vs GL: Finch's fireworks secure 7-wicket win for Gujarat

Bengaluru: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) suffered yet another thumping defeat as after being bundled up for mere 134 runs, their bowlers failed to stop Gujarat Lions (GL) batsmen from achieving the target with seven wickets in hand and 37 balls remaining.

Aaron Finch played the pivotal role in the chase as he not only completed a 22-ball half-century but also went on to score 72 runs off only 34 balls in the 31st match of the Indian Premier League season 10. He decorated his inning with 5 flourishing fours and 6 humongous sixes at the M Chinnaswamy ground here on Thursday.

GL skipper Suresh Raina remained unbeaten at 34 off 30 balls, with 4 fours and a six to ensure his team’s only third win this season. The young Ishan Kishan was given a chance to open the innings to exploit the RCB bowlers during six overs of powerplay, but he failed to do so despite getting off to a fine start. He scored 16 runs off 11 balls with 4 boundaries.

His opening partner, Brendon McCullum, who has been off-colour this season, once again failed to contribute much as he departed after adding 3 runs off 6 balls. Ravindra Jadeja (2 off 4) and Raina remained unbeaten.

Samuel Badree once again proved himself as a mystery for the batsmen as he bagged 2 wickets and conceded 29 runs in his 3 overs. Pawan Negi was the only other successful bowler as he took the wicket of Finch, however, it was too late as the Aussie batsman had already set the match in favour of Gujarat Lions.

Earlier, after being invited to bat first, RCB continued its batting woes as half of their team, including Virat Kohli (10), Chris Gayle (8) and AB de Villiers (5) had returned to the pavilion with just 60 runs on the scoreboard. De Villiers, however, fell prey to a bad call from Mandeep Singh (8 off 14), as he got run out of a brilliant direct hit by Ravindra Jadeja.

Kedar Jadhav, who was looking in great touch, foolishly threw his wicket after scoring 31 runs off just 18 balls hitting 4 fours and a six. Pawan Negi played a similar inning of 32 runs off 19 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes and also got out in a similar irresponsible manner. Aniket Choudhary remained unbeaten at 15 runs off 12 balls with one boundary.

Andrew Tye continued his great form with ball as he bagged three wickets for only 12 runs in his four overs. He was also adjudged man of the match for his tremendous performance. Ravindra Jadeja also plucked two wickets for 28 runs in his 4 overs, while Basil Thampi, Ankit Soni and James Faulkner took one scalp each.

With this defeat, RCB has strengthened its position at seventh position in the IPL points table among the 8 participants.
