IPL 10 GL vs MI: Bumrah helps Mumbai clinch Super Over battle

Rajkot: The tenth edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) witnessed its first tie, thus leading to a Super Over in the match between Gujarat Lions (GL) and Mumbai Indians (MI) which eventually dramatically ended in favour of the latter at the Saurashtra Cricket Association stadium here on Saturday.

Mumbai Indians won the super over by 5 runs after Kieron Pollard hit a six and a four off the bowling of James Faulkner to set 12-run target for Gujarat Lions. Coming in to chase down the target, Brendon McCullum and Aaron Finch could not get going against Jasprit Bumrah, who even bowled a front-foot no ball on the very first delivery.

The tie could not happen if Gujarat Lions all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was not as good on the field as he was today. He the last two wickets of MI (Jasprit Bumrah and Krunal Pandya) fell following two great direct hits by the left-arm leggie. His efforts, however, went in vain but he surely gave a terrific treat to the Cricket fans with his brilliance on the field.

Coming in to chase a modest target of 154 runs, Mumbai Indians got off to a decent start as the openers Jos Buttler (9) and Parthiv Patel added 43 runs for the first wicket in just 4 overs, before the former departed. Patel continued his rampage with the bat as he got out after scoring a splendid knock of 70 runs. He just took 44 balls and laced his inning with 9 fours and a six.

Nitish Rana looked good in his 19-run knock which came off only 16 balls and was decorated with one four and a six, but he failed to continue for long. Skipper Rohit Sharma could only add 5 runs, while Kieron Pollard made 15 runs off 11 balls.

Krunal Pandya played a crucial role inning to ensure the tie as he added 29 runs off 20 balls hitting 2 fours and a six, before being run out on the final delivery of the inning. Hardik Pandya could not do much this time as he added only 4 runs off 5 balls.

Harbhajan Singh went for a golden duck while Mitchell McClenaghan added one run before getting run out by Irfan Pathan. Lasith Malinga remained unbeaten at none.

GL bowling department suffered a major jolt after their main paceman Andrew Tye got injured after bowling just one over of his spell which went for 9 runs. Basil Thampi, however, looked at his best in his four-over spell as he took three wickets for only 29 runs.

James Faulkner bagged two wickets for 34 runs in his 4 overs, while Ankit Soni bowled a sensation spell of four-overs giving away only 16 runs and bagging the important wicket of Nitish Rana. Irfan Pathan (0/26, 2 overs) and Ravindra Jadeja (0/11, 1 over) remained wicket-less.

Winning to the toss and coming in to bat first did not turn out to be a good decision for Gujarat Lions as they could only manage 153 runs for 9 wickets in final 20 overs. Ishan Kishan played a brilliant 48-run knock off 35 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes. He, however, missed out on a deserving half-century.

Ravindra Jadeja also played a crucial inning of 28 runs that came off 21 balls and was laced with 2 fours and a six. James Faulkner held on to one end with his 21-run knock, but took 27 balls to do so. Andrew Tye showed some fireworks later in the inning by scoring 25 runs off only 12 balls and hitting 2 fours and 2 sixes. Ankit Soni (7* off 2) hit a six off the last ball of the inning to bring the total of 153/9. Basil Thampi also added 2 runs off 4 balls.

Krunal Pandya was the pick of the bowlers for Mumbai Indians as he bagged three wickets for only 14 runs in his 4 overs. He was also adjudged man of the match for his all-round performance.

Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga bagged two wickets each and conceded 32 and 33 runs, respectively, in their four-over spells each. Harbhajan Singh bagged one wicket and gave only 23 runs in four overs. Mitchell McClenaghan was too expensive today as he spent 50 runs off his 4 overs.

All in all, it was a gem of a Cricket match in which both teams showed a lot of character and held on to their nerves amazingly to provide a pleasing experience to the viewers. The standard of fielding, however, was once again very low as a lot of catches were dropped by players from both sides.
