HC bans sale of tobacco products near schools, courts

Allahabad: Allahabad High Court on Thursday banned the sale of cigarette, tobacco and pan masala within the range of 500 metres from schools and courts. The court has asked to implement the orders in Allahabad.

The same could also be implemented in Uttar Pradesh later. The Court has asked both central and state governments to respond within two weeks. The next hearing will be on July 21.

  • Justices Arun Tandon and Suneeta Agarwal gave the order on Public Interest Ligitation (PIL).
  • The Court said that the sale of the drugs has an adverse impact on children's minds.
  • Law intern Pranvesh Yadav had filed a petition against the sale of tobacco products.
  • Instructions regarding the removal of advertising of tobacco products have also been given.
