Guj HC holds ten persons guilty of murder in post-Godhra riots

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat High Court on Thursday held ten of the 27 accused guilty of killing two persons at Meda Adraj village under Kadi tehsil of Mehsana district in the state during post-Godhra riots while reserving a verdict of acquittal given by a trial court.

The sentence will be pronounced by a division bench comprising Justices Anant Dev and B N Karia on August 4.

It may be mentioned that the 27 accused were acquitted by a fast-track court of Mehsana on June 14, 2005.

What was the case:

  • The victims were killed on March 3, 2002, not many days after the Godhra train burning incident.
  • Kalu Miyan Saiyed along with his daughter Hasina Bibi was encircled by an enraged mob of around 200 people and burnt alive at one Joitaram Prajapati’s compound in the village.
  • Six eyewitnesses had testified against the accused in the court.
