Floor test to be held under Centre's supervision: SC

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the attorney General (AG) to hold floor test in Uttarakhand assembly under the supervision of the Central Government.

The court adjourned the hearing on the Centre’s appeal against the Uttarakhand high court verdict, till Wednesday.

  • A bench comprising Justices Dipak Misra and Shiva Kirti could not take up the case on Tuesday and will hear it up on Wednesday.
  • During the brief hearing, the bench repeated its suggestion that the Centre should consider holding a floor test in the assembly under its supervision to ascertain the actual situation.

Earlier developments:

  • The apex court had on April 22 stayed the judgment of the Uttarakhand high court quashing imposition of President's rule, till April 27.
  • On April 27, it had extended the stay till further orders and had also framed a set of questions while giving the liberty to the AG to include other questions the government would like to be addressed.

What Justice Dipak Mishra said:

“Both, horses trading and airing of sting operation, create a dent in democracy. That is why we said that a floor test is the ultimate test,” Justice Misra stated.
