New Delhi: In a major jolt to Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Election Commission on Monday allotted the Samajwadi Party's 'cycle' symbol to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

After a series of hearings, the EC pronounced its verdict on Monday. The EC's verdict brought this over a month-long tussle between the father and son to a logical end.

It will mean the SP patriarch Mulayam will have to surrender before the son or contest the UP elections on different symbol.

Earlier in the day, Mulayam had come down heavily on his son while addressing the SP workers at the party headquarters dubbing Akhilesh as 'anti-Muslim'.

Today's development also brightens the possibility of electoral alliance between SP and the Congress in the upcoming UP elections.

Akhilesh supporters have started gathering outside Chief Minister’s residence at 5 Kalidas Marg. They are chanting slogans of 'Jai Akhilesh' along with fireworks.
