Communal Tension: Curfew to be partially lifted in Lakhimpur on Saturday

Lakhimpur: Curfew will be called off from morning 6 till evening 6 in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh which observed communal tension following objectionable contents on social media.

What the DM Akashdeep said?

  • Schools and colleges will remained closed.
  • Internet services will remain active in the district.
  • Action will be taking against black marketing of food items.
  • People should not give importance to rumours and maintain peace.
  • Strict action also will be taken against people spreading rumours.
  • Those injured in firing are now out of danger.

An uneasy calm prevailed on Friday in Terai region of Lakhimpur Kheri after communal tension in the city following derogatory contents on the social media hurting religious sentiments of one community. The district administration had promptly imposed the curfew on Thursday evening as a precautionary measure on the eve of last two phases of UP assembly polls.

The situation threatened to assume communal propositions when members of one community were agitated over some objectionable contents were posted on the social media hurting religious sentiments of one community. As the news spread, the members came on the street compelling district authorities to impose the curfew and suspend internet services immediately to stop rumour -mongering.

Meanwhile, the police force from neighbouring districts was rushed to Lakhimpur and the senior police officials reached the troubled district, about 130 kms from the state capital. A total of four BJP activists including one Vinod Gupta had been arrested in this connection while peace committee was promptly set up to diffuse the tension.

District Magistrate Akashdeep while talking to newstrack.com stated that the peace had been restored in most of the areas and if situation remained the same, the curfew would be lifted by Friday evening. On the other hand, some acrimonious scenes were witnessed in the peace committee meeting when leaders of the ruling samajwadi Party and Bharatiya Janata Party had heated exchange of words on Friday morning.

BJP leader arrested:

The Lakhimpur police has also arrested four people including a Bhartiya Janata Party leader Vinod Gupta, who had been allegedly involved in breach of peace in the area.

According to the Police officials, "The people who had been injured in the clash, that sparked off after the FB post went viral, had filed a report against four people including a BJP leader.

The case:

  • An objectionable Facebook post had triggered communal tension in the city of Lakhimpur in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.

  • A video post portraying Hindu God in bad light was posted on Facebook after which a massive protest erupted in the city.
