Chandigarh: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Naresh Yadav was on Saturday granted bail by a local court in Sangrur district of Punjab in a case regarding desecration of a holy book.

“AAP Legislator Naresh Yadav’s bail plea has been approved by justice A S Virk in a district court of Punjab,” head of party’s legal cell Himmat Singh told media persons.

The MLA from Mehrauli of the central capital was sent to two-day police custody by the district court of Malerkotla in Punjab on Monday last. Subsequently, he was taken into the judicial custody till August 1 on Wednesday last.

Other highlights:

  • The AAP leader was detained by Punjab police in full public view from his office in Mehrauli on Sunday last.
  • The controversy was sparked after as many as 100 torn and charred pages of Islamic holy book Quran were allegedly found in a drain near a cemetery in Malerkota.
  • Yadav was interrogated by the police for over eight hours in connection with the case on July 9.
  • Yadav was apprehended after Vijay Singh – the key accused in the case – said he was offered Rs 1 crore by the legislator to burn the copies of Quran.
