New Delhi: After massive electoral setback in recent Assembly polls, the Congress party is evidently facing a fund crunch. The grand old party, which has been unable to garner votes in the past, is possibly running out of funds for the next Assembly elections in seven states including Punjab.

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Digvijaya Singh was seen shining up to the party functionaries and urged them to contribute Rs 250 each to the party fund every year.

Singh was addressing a youth congress function to mark Rajiv Gandhi’s 25th death anniversary in New Delhi on Saturday last.

Highlights:

  • The party has almost four crore workers across the country.
  • With all functionaries contributing Rs 250 each, the party may collect Rs 1,000 crore every year.
  • Earlier, a committee established by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had approached the Members of Parliament (MPs) to donate Rs 50,000 each to party fund every year.
