Chanting of ‘Om’ is non-Islamic: Darul Uloom Deoband

Saharanpur: In another controversial statement, India’s largest Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband has said that chanting of the word ‘Om’ is non-Islamic.

“To chant Om is definitely against the Islamic ethics and its inclusion in a common exercise by the government is not secularly righteous. Moreover, we advice all the Muslims not to participate in the international Yoga day,” said seminary’s chief cleric Maulana Abul Qasim Nomani.

The seminary’s statement came after the common yoga protocol was circulated by the Ministry of AYUSH, which said that the yogic practice shall start with the word ‘Om’ to enhance the benefits of the exercise.

The protocol was prepared by a government-appointed panel of experts for the participants of the International Yoga Day on June 21. It was circulated through government departments, schools, colleges and universities across the country.
