New Delhi: More than a year after the Rajya Sabha (RS) approved a bill of a private member for safeguarding the rights of the third gender people, the Centre has cleared a homogeneous legislation to protect them from discrimination.

The Union cabinet on Wednesday approved the ‘Transgender Persons Bill 2016’ to be introduced in Parliament.

“This bill is the government’s bid to evolve the mechanism for the economic, social and educational empowerment of the transgender people. The bill is primarily aimed at eradicating the discrimination and abuse against this marginalised section of the society and bring them into the mainstream,” said an official statement.
