Sao Paulo /New Delhi: Another questionable defence deal during the Congress-led United progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre has come to light after a top-selling Brazilian newspaper reported about the payments of kick-back in the sale of Embraer Jet.

'Folha De Sao', the largest selling newspaper of Brazil has questioned the probity in the deal and alleged that Embraer had paid kick backs to some British middlemen to sell its jets. The Brazil and United States governments are probing Embraer jet deals with India and Saudi Arabia, according to newspaper.

The Embraer Deal:

  • The deal with Brazil's jet manufacturer Embraer took place in 2008.
  • The EMB-145 jet aircrafts were purchased at the cost of 2.8 billion dollors.
  • These were to integrated with the Automated Vehicle Access Control System (AVACS) by installing Rs2520 crore radars developed by Defence Research and Design Organisation (DRDO).
  • The first aircraft was received by DRDO in 2011 and the rest were also received during UPA regime.

What newspaper reported:

  • The report quoted Albert Philip Clause, the defence deal manager of the company, said that some middleman was involved in the deal.
  • This was disclosed to American investigator that by a former director of the company.
  • The payment of kick back came to the fore when an employee of the told Brazilian authorities about this in the month of may last.
  • DRDO, however, feigns ignorance about the nitty-gritty of the deal.
