Wipro sacks its 600 employees, further infuriating Indian IT workforce

New Delhi: Wipro, the third largest IT Company of India, has fired several employees owing to its annual ‘performance appraisal’.

According to a source from the company, 600 employees were sacked altogether and amidst speculations, the number might continue to rise to 2,000.

The Bangalore-based company, which is accorded as the best management companies of the world by Forbes, has an offshore development spread across six continents and boasts a massive workforce of 1,79,000 across the world, as marked at the end of December 2016.

When contacted, Wipro said it undertakes a "rigorous performance appraisal process" on a regular basis to align its workforce with business objectives, strategic priorities of the company and client requirements.

"The performance appraisal may also lead to the separation of some employees from the company and these numbers vary from year to year," it added.

The company, however, preferred to remain silent on exact number of employees that has been asked to leave.

This development came at a time when Indian IT companies are facing grievous challenges and impediments on the issuance of work visas for their clients from the major IT hub countries like US, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.
