New Delhi: Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu said on Sunday said that violence cannot resolve any issue and that is why the government has chosen the route of dialogue for resolving the Kashmir issue.

"There can't be peace and harmony in the society in the absence of non-violence. Our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) emphasises on development, and peace and harmony in the society is a must for development," Naidu said while speaking at the "Ahimsa Diwas" function organised by Ahimsa Vishwa Bharti on its 13th Foundation Day here.

"Non-violence is also important because violence can't resolve any thing, it can only lead to revenge. That is why the government recently decided to go for dialogue in Kashmir for establishing lasting peace there," he said.

The government on October 24 announced the appointment of former Director of the Intelligence Bureau Dineshwar Sharma as its interlocutor for Jammu and Kashmir.

The Vice President said Indian culture is pluralistic and unity in diversity is its fundamental characteristic and expressed the hope that the Ahimsa Vishva Bharti Institution would play an important role in building society and the nation by connecting the younger generation to the path of non-violence.
