Uttarakhand Weather Update: IMD issues heavy rain alert, halt on Char Dham Yatra

New Delhi: Amidst the alert of the Meteorological Department, the weather remained bad in most areas of the state including the capital Dehradun on Sunday. At the same time, the Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rain in most mountainous areas including Chardham for two-three days from Sunday, October 17. On the other hand, in view of the bad weather, the administration has temporarily stopped the journey of Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri Dham.

Rain alert in Uttrakhand:

At Har ki Paudi railway station and bus stand in Haridwar, the police are constantly appealing to the passengers to take a bath and go back. In Rishikesh also, pilgrims and tourists are being appealed not to visit the hilly areas and the Ganga Ghats. In Nainital, Haridwar, Uttarkashi and Tehri districts, the district administration has declared a day off in all schools and colleges for October 18.


Trekking and mountaineering have been banned in all forest areas of Chamoli district from October 17 to 19. Amit Kanwar, director of Nanda Devi Biosphere, has instructed the forest officers and employees that if any team has gone to the forest areas, then bring them to safe places immediately.

IMD issues heavy rain alert:

The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rain in most mountainous areas including Chardham of Uttarakhand for two-three days from Sunday, October 17. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed the Disaster Management Department, Police Administration and all the District Magistrates to be on alert.


Keeping this warning in view, Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority and Disaster Management Department have appealed to all the local residents and travelers to be vigilant, keep distance from river drains and stay at safe places. Travelers coming to Uttarakhand and traveling are also requested to plan their travel keeping in view the weather warnings and avoid traveling during this period.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has inquired about the situation in the state from Chief Secretary Dr. SS Sandhu over phone in view of the heavy rains in the state. The Chief Minister has directed that police, SDRF and other concerned personnel should be kept on high alert at sensitive places. Wherever any incident happens, the response time should be minimum. He said that the affected should get immediate relief if needed. Special care should also be taken on the Char Dham Yatra route. Said that Chardham Yatris and tourists should also be appealed to take precautions.
