Lucknow: As the Centre is gearing up to table a bill in the Lok Sabha making 'triple talaq' a punishable offence, All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) in an emergency meeting here on Sunday, said that the Triple Talaq bill is against women welfare and will ruin Muslim families.

Demanding withdrawal of Triple Talaq, AIMPLB said that no Muslim organisation or scholar was consulted.

"No procedure was followed in drafting this bill, no stakeholder was consulted. President of AIMPLB will convey this stand to PM and request him to withhold and withdraw the bill," said Sajjad Nomani, AIMPLB.

The crucial meeting will be chaired by AIMPLB President Maulana Rabey Hasani Nadvi. Vice President of AIMPLB Maulana Dr Kalbe Sadiq, however, will not attend the meeting due to health issues.

A bill on making instantaneous divorce, a practice followed by Muslims, a punishable offence was scheduled to be introduced in the Lower House of the Parliament on Friday but following the uproar by Opposition, it will be tabled in the house next week.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017, provides for three-year imprisonment and fine for men who orally divorce their wives and also gives such Muslim women the right to seek maintenance.

Earlier on August 22, in an historic judgment, a five-judge constitutional bench of the Supreme Court had invalidated Triple Talaq practice for six months and had asked the Centre to make a law regarding this.

The five-judge bench comprised of Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, Justice Kurian Joseph, Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and Justice S. Abdul Nazeer pronounced the historic verdict.

Justice Nariman, Justice Umesh Lalit and Justice Kurien had opposed the view of CJI Khehar and Justice Abdul Nazeer and termed the Triple Talaq practice as unconstitutional.
