Thanks United Nations !!! You lit up our Deepawali

New York: In a touching maiden gesture, the United Nations, on the auspicious festival of Deepawali, lit up on Saturday evening here to celebrate the festival. This is for the first time that UN is celebrating prime festival of any nation. The building of UN displays message of Happy Diwali along with a lamp.

It was in 2014 when General Assembly of UN had adopted a resolution recognizing Indian festival of lights and later 2016 onwards the United States had announced Diwali as an optional holiday. The UN headquarters will remain lit for three days from October 29- October 31.

Furthermore, the UN also decided to observe Diwali as no-meeting day, in a way, making it a sort of holiday. It comes as a huge honour to India by the UN

It could be mentioned here that on International Yoga Day, in June, the building was also lit up with images of Yoga postures.

India’s Ambassador to United Nations Syed Akbaruddin, on micro-blogging site, Twitter thanked United Nations for the initiative.
