Srinagar: Lance Naik Zakir Ahmed Wani lost his life in an encounter with terrorist in Shopian district.

Wani was shot during an anti-terror operation in Shopian district on Sunday. He was immediately taken to the hospital where, on Monday, he succumbed to his injuries.

His battalion was attached to a unit of Rashtriya Rifles.

Wani was once an 'ikhwan' (a terrorist who surrenders and involved in country-insurgency operations) before joining the army.

The Lance Naik, who began his career with Territorial Army’s 162 Battalion in 2004, received a 21 gun salute on Monday as his body lowered into the grave.

His body was wrapped in the tricolour and was taken to his native village and given to his family.

A senior Army officer said, " Wani was a terrorist initially and became a counter-insurgent after he realised the futility of violence. He added, "The family was fighting tears and were honoured by the sacrifice of Lance Naik Wani for the nation.
