Tamil Nadu and Assam create history of sort in V S polls
New Delhi: Two states, Tamil Nadu and Assam, out of five which have gone to the recent polls have created a history. While Tamil Nadu will go down in history as one state where there will be a no change in government, Assam will be known for ending Tarun Gogai rule after about 15 years.
Tamil Nadu, of the two, holds a special position. For, the state, for the first time, has re-elected the same party, a feat not achieved since 1989. On the other hand Assam which was under the Congress for more than a decade will be headed by the BJP for the first time. In fact, it is party’s first dent into the North-East.
The BJP’s jubilation can be understood in this context. Of course, it had toiled hard to make it possible. Ever since he was named the Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi has been addressing the people of the region regularly. Other members of the party had also paid special attention to the area.
For the Congress it is a big loss, the reason being that it has fared badly in other election-bound states too. Kerala has also given the party a jolt.
The result of other states was o n the predictable lines. For instance, it was known before the polling that West Bengal will retain Trinamool Congress.
