Shaktiman, police horse injured by BJP MLA in Dehradun, dies

Dehradun: Police horse ‘Shaktiman’, whose leg was amputated after being thrashed during a Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) protest in Dehradun, died on Wednesday.

“It underwent an operation after the poor creature was injured on March 14 last. Shaktiman was given a prosthetic leg by surgery but was unable to recover from infection and died,” said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dehradun Sadanand.

“Shaktiman, who was suffering from medical complications, passed away at 1730 hrs. The exact cause of his death will only be known after the autopsy,” said Inspector General (IG) Garhwal Sanjay Gunjyal.

Highlights:

  • The BJP Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Ganesh Joshi, who was accused of attacking the horse, was arrested following the national outrage over the incident.
  • The 13-year-old horse was given an artificial leg and was confined to the police lines since it was injured.
  • It was a well trained stallion and part of Uttarakhand police for years.
