Sensex breaks old records, rises to a record high

Mumbai: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark, Sensex, crossed 30000-mark on Wednesday for the second time in last two years. However, it was the first time in its 31-year-history that it closed above this mark. Foreign institutional investors and robust earning by some of the Indian companies in the last quarter have largely contributed to this unusual rise.

The previous day, Tuesday, had ended with the sensex closing little below this mark, at 29943 points. This had kindled hope of crossing the 30000- mark on Wednesday. It was not belied as the next day ( Wednesday) closed at 30,133 points.

A thirty kilo cake was cut into pieces to mark the occasion.

This height was reached previously in 2015 but the difference between now and then is that it had closed two years ago below 30,000. It had opened with 30,000-plus but had soon come down this level.

Several Indian companies had posted higher earnings in the last quarter which made major contribution in reaching this height.. The list included Wipro and Reliance. Some of the banks too had recorded better profits which included Axis Bank, IDFC and HDFC.
