Lucknow: Sanjay Gandhi who died on this day ( June 23) 36 years ago is being remembered and will be remembered in future for his contribution to check population explosion which has denied benefits of government measures to a large number of people in this country.

Born on December 1946 into the Nehru -Gandhi family, he was widely expected to succeed his mother, late Indira Gandhi as the president of the Congress Party. His early death in a plane crash led his elder brother Rajiv to succeed her. He is survived by his wife and a son Varun Gandhi, both of whom have joined the BJP. His widow is a minister in the BJP-led government at the Centre.

Although he had no previous knowledge of automobile industry , he became managing director of Maruti Motors Limited which was asked to produce a people’s car. The project was abandoned half-way for different reasons.

. The national emergency imposed in 1975 saw him emerge as an important leader. During this period , although he held no official position, he is alleged to have interfered in administrative works
