Lucknow: Two young persons have emerged out of shadows and occupied the centre-stage on the eve of elections in five states including Uttar Pradesh--- Akhilesh Yadav and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. If the two are successful and make their marks, they may pose a threat to the BJP, particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the next Lok Sabha poll.
The next parliament election is as crucial for Modi as these two. All the three have much at stake. Of the trio, Modi has already proved his mettle. The other two have to establish themselves and this can be done during the upcoming polls during the upcoming polls.
Between the two, the task is uphill for Priyanka. For, her involvement in electoral politics was limited to Rae Bareli and Amethi, the constituencies represented by mother Sonia Gandhi and brother Rahul Gandhi , respectively. After the elections in these two, she used to recede to the background. She will have to play a larger role not only during the election but the post-poll period.
The problem here is that if she is more active and the party does better in the upcoming assembly elections , her brother will relegate to the background and she will emerge as a better person to lead the party which neither Sonia nor Rahul would like.
She has been campaigning for the party since 1999 and several times in the past slogans like "Priyanka Lao, Desh Bachao have been raised by some party men who were unhappy with the handling of the party and others affairs by Rahul. The demand grew after Prashant Kishor joined the party and expressed himself in favour of Priyanka.
It may be because of Kishor that the party leadership and Priyanka agreed to play a larger role. Her stocks went up after her invention led to alliance between her party and the Samajwadi Party reached a few days ago. The talks had almost failed as the SP had released its first list of candidates and fielded party men even for constituencies which were won by the Congress. She saw to it that the alliance was formed. At least this is what is being generally believed.
Her stature in the party and outside will grow if she takes more interest in the coming elections and her party position improves after the poll. In that case more and more party men will join Priyanka Lao chorus to the embarrassment of Rahul. It is too early to predict how Sonia will handle that situation.
Akhilesh does not face this kind of situation. He has proved that he enjoys far more better support in the party than his uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav and his father who has founded the party. Also that he can carry Mulayam Singh Yadav's legacy well.
He has raised his position in the party in a remarkably short time. He came to the forefront and was appointed chief minister only five years ago. There were many in the party who were more experienced but all of them were beaten hollow by this young man. One conclusion which can be drawn in this light is that he will go places and has a good future.
In the political circles he is being bracketed now with Bihar chief minsiter Nitish Kumar, Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik and West Bengal chief minister Mamta Banerjee who have acquired a national status.Better showing in the upcoming election in the state will improve his position further and may help him emerge as a national leader, posing a greater threat to the saffron brigade.
