Lucknow: The Earth will witness a rare phenomenon -- the transit of Mercury (planet Mercury crossing Sun’s path) -- on Monday at 1642 hrs. This occurs 13 times in 100 years.

The astronomers said that the rare phenomenon will take about seven and half hours, for Mercury to complete its journey. The size of planet will prevent it from covering the sun and it will be seen as the small black dot on the biggest star of the Universe.

Highlights:

  • The impact of the planet’s position will be seen in India from 1642 hours to 1906 hours.
  • The scientists have advised not to stare at the Sun with naked eyes and to use the telescope instead, to watch the rare happening.
  • Although, the phenomenon will take place again in year 2019 but it won't be seen as it will happen after the sunset. The next transit will be seen in year 2032.
  • Earlier, India had witnessed the transit of mercury in North Eastern regions during the sunrise in year 2006.
