Mumbai: The government has appointed Rajnish Kumar, managing director at the State Bank of India, as the new chairman of State Bank of India on Wednesday.

He will be succeeding existing chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya as her tenure is ending later this week.

Kumar's appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. According to a statement issued by the Department of Personnel and Training, he would be serving in office for a period of three years from October 7, according to an order.

About Rajnish Kumar:

  • He had joined SBI in 1980 as a probationary officer.
  • Handling responsibilities in various departments, he assumed the office of the Managing Director of SBI in 2015.
  • He had also served as the managing director and CEO of merchant banking arm SBI Capital Markets.
