New Delhi: In wake of a number of rail accidents and derailments in the Indian Railways, Chairman of the Railway Board, Ashok Kumar Mittal on Wednesday resigned from the post. Mittal submitted his resignation to Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, official sources said.

The resignation came after the most recent of the accidents- the Kaifyat Express derailment in Auraiya district of Uttar Pradesh, on early Wednesday morning, in which more than 70 people were injured.

It is worth mentioning that the accident took place four days after a more serious derailment in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar that left at least 22 people dead.
