Protesters wreck BJP office in Assam, burn Modi's effigy

Guwahati: The Assam BJP office was ravaged, on Thursday night by a group of agitators belonging to Oikya Sena Asom due to rising protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.

The agitators wrecked the BJP office in Palashbari area, while staging a state wide protest, police said on Friday.

The protesters set fire to the effigies of PM Modi and Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

These protesters were also shouting slogans against the BJP-led NDA government and blocked the national highway. However, the police took the agitators into custody.

It is to be mentioned that Assam is witnessing protests against Union Cabinet, as it approved the Bill that ensures to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955.

This Act makes illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians, hailing from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for Indian citizenship.

After the recommendation of the Bill by Central government, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) not only snapped its ties with BJP but its three ministers furnished their resignation.

The northeastern states observed a total shutdown in protest on Tuesday.
