President confers Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri awards

Noted theater personality from Maharashtra Babasaheb Purandare alias Balwant Moreshwar Purandare (Padma Vibhushan), Bihar leader Hukumdev Narayan Yadav (Padma Bhushan), former CEO of multinational techno giant Cisco Systems John Chambers, renowned dancer and filmmaker Prabhu Deva (Padma Shri) were also honoured with the award.

New Delhi: President Ramnath Kovind presented the prestigious Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awards in a special program held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, on Tuesday, to 56 of the 112 personalities selected for the honour. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also attended the event.

Actor Kader Khan (posthumous) was honoured with Padma Shri, while, Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Kuldip Nayar (posthumous) were honoured with Padma Bhushan.

The president also conferred the Padma shri award upon famous singer and music director Shankar Mahadevan.

Apart from this, Kabaddi team captain Ajay Thakur, and Bajrang Puniya, a freestyle wrestler from sports filed were also accorded with the Padma Shri award. Mr. Kovind also honored the tennis player Sharath Kamal and Grandmaster Harika Drownali with the Padma Shri.

Padma awards were announced on the eve of Republic Day and the rest are expected to be awarded in a program organized on March 16, 2019.
