Prior to the visit to the memorial, in a joint address to the media, Modi said that many Indian soldiers had laid down their lives in World Wars I and II and he would be paying homage to them.

On his part, Macron said: "Many Indian soldiers died for our country, for its freedom and it is evidence of strong bonds between our countries."
