Madurai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday laid the foundation stone for an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Thoppur near Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Modi also inaugurated super specialty blocks at three medical colleges in Rajaji, Thanjavur and Tirunelveli through a video conference.

AIIMS, built at a cost of Rs 1,264 crore, will be the first such facility in Tamil Nadu.

It is to be mentioned that after its completion, the proposed 750-bed modern AIIMS will also offer 100 MBBS seats, which is expected to go on stream in 2022.

The Prime Minister, speaking at an event said, "The NDA government is giving great priority to the health sector so that everyone is healthy and the health care is affordable. Today I am happy to inaugurate the super specialty hospitals in Madurai, Thanjavur and Tirunelveli."

Moreover, Chief Minister K Palaniswami thanked PM Modi for providing the AIIMS to Tamil Nadu. Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam was also present at the event. He said that AIIMS will be of great use for the people of southern backward districts of Tamil Nadu.

The Union Cabinet had approved Madurai AIIMS in December 2018.
