New Delhi: Union Minister Piyush Goyal will be the Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha. Earlier Thaawarchand Gehlot was in this post, but this post fell vacant after he was made the Governor of Karnataka. Goyal is currently the Deputy Leader of the Upper House.

Piyush Goyal to be leader of House in Rajya Sabha:

As a senior MP, Goyal has been an effective floor manager, under his leadership important bills like triple talaq and Article 370 have been passed. Hailing from Maharashtra, Goyal has an excellent rapport with the people of the state and the opposition leaders in the House.

Member of RS since 2010:

Goyal was earlier the Railway Minister, but after the recent cabinet reshuffle, he is handling three portfolios including commerce and industry. Piyush Goyal has been a member of Rajya Sabha since 2010. He has a good rapport with the opposition leaders in the House. Earlier, the names of Nirmala Sitharaman and Bhupendra Yadav were also considered by the BJP for the leader in the Rajya Sabha.

Earlier, another name that was doing the rounds was that of Labor Minister Bhupendra Yadav, who was recently inducted into the cabinet. Yadav has been a seasoned politician, who is well versed in the rules and regulations of parliamentary proceedings.

The monsoon session of Parliament is starting from July 19 and will continue till August 13. The monsoon session, which usually starts in July, started in September last year due to the global pandemic coronavirus.
