Giving priority to the health and convenience of women, Sikkim University has taken an important step. Now the girl students will be given one day leave every month during periods. This decision was announced by the university registrar Laxman Sharma on December 4. This decision was taken on the request of the student union Sikkim University Students Association (SUSA).

According to the university notification, this leave will be given to the girl students every month, but it will not be applicable during examinations. The registrar also clarified that this leave will be adjusted in the criteria of 75 percent attendance of the girl students, so that it does not affect their academic performance.

This is not the first time that Sikkim has taken such a step in the interest of women. Earlier, the Sikkim High Court had started giving 2-3 days of pad leave to its female employees during menstruation. This initiative makes the High Court the first court in the country to make provision for periods leave for women.

According to the High Court notification, women employees are given leave on the recommendation of the medical staff. There will be no deduction in salary on taking leave. This leave will also not be counted in the leave account of women employees.

The credit for this decision in Sikkim University goes to the student union, which raised this issue last month. According to the student union, it is often difficult for the girl students to attend classes during periods, and this leave was very important for their health and rest.

These decisions of Sikkim University and the High Court are being considered a big step towards the health and rights of women. This will not only increase their efficiency, but will also take care of their mental and physical health.
