Before joining hands with PDP on November 1, 2014, Gani was a Congress party member and had served at many capacities. It is worth mentioning that this was the second aattack on the PDP leader in past fourteen days.

The attack took place hours after Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh over the deteriorating law and order condition across the state.

The CM after the meeting assured that in the coming two-three months, the situation in the valley would definitely improve.

"In a period of two-three months, you will see a changed Jammu and Kashmir. Next few months are really crucial for us. We will first restore the normalcy, than we will talk. This issue is as old as 70 years," Mufti said.

Mufti also appealed to the media to help the government in restoring peace across the valley.

The meeting was scheduled in the backdrop of a number of videos surfacing in recent times, purportedly showing violation of human rights by the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir.
