It is high time we change our working style, says PM Modi on Civil Services Day

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday, said that the era of development, India is witnessing presently, needs us to bring a change in our working style. The present era is of competition and the trends that have changed in last 15-20 years have altered the dynamics, the Prime Minister stated while conferring awards for Excellence in Public Administration on the occasion of Civil Services Day.

Changing trends in the last 15-20 years have altered the dynamics, he stated, adding, “Competition can play a big role in bringing a qualitative change. People are now seeing alternatives and with changing times, a need may arise that we may have to change our working style.”

The PM also suggested E-governance as a vital tool to reach out to people of the country for benefitting them. “E-governance, M-governance, social media- these are good means to reach out to the people and for their benefits,” PM Modi said.

What else he said:

  • Earlier, role of the government, from healthcare to wanting to set up an industry, was very strong but things have changed in 15 years and it can be about a private airline or a private healthcare service.
  • From regulator, we need to be an enabling entity.
  • With quantum jump in work, must also come a qualitative change.
  • Hierarchy remains an issue- this is something we inherited from colonial rulers and we did not leave that behind in Mussoorie.
  • A spirit of ownership is essential. Let us believe that through this set up we can bring a positive change in people's lives.
  • The push for reform comes from political leadership but the perform angle is determined by officers.
  • Jan Bhagidari transforms every policy of ours and its implementation has to be outcome centric.
  • India is seen as a ray of hope world over and our democratic values are globally admired.
