New Delhi: Coming to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rescue, Piyush Goyal, Minister of State for Power, has sent a show cause notice to state-owned power distribution company, Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (DVVNL) asking it to explain why a false report was given regarding electrification of Nagla Fatela village.

The notice has allowed the company to respond within three days.

"We want to know why they told us that the village has been energised while in reality is hasn’t been,” Goyal said.

The minister also stated, “It is not possible for us to go to each village and check, for this we will have to depend on information provided by state governments. We at the centre have always been more than eager to facilitate and provide funds for electrification.”

About the controversy:

  • The PM had, on Independence Day, claimed that it had taken 70 years for electricity to reach this small village but in reality, this village continues to live in darkness and the issue was highlighted by newstrack.com few days ago.
  • Modi in his Independence Day speech had said, "It takes only three hours to reach Nagla Fatela. But it took 70 years for electricity to reach there”, it kicked up a lot of dust. Opposition leaders in and outside the state picked it up and and made much noise over his "false" statement.
