N Biren Singh takes oath as new Chief Minister of Manipur

Imphal: N Biren Singh was sworn-in as the new chief minister of Manipur here on Wednesday. The oath of office and secrecy was administered to him by state Governor Najma Heptulla .

Seven other members including some from those parties which have extended support also took oath along with him. The BJP-led government which was formed for the first time in the state will have a deputy chief minister . He, L Joykumar Singh, belongs to the Naga People's Party (NPP)which is one of the groups supporting the government.

Other ministers sworn-in are Biswajit (BJP), Karan Shyam( Lok Janshakti Party), L. Haokip (NPP),N. Koyis( NPP’) Losie Dikho (Naga People's Front), T. Shyamkumar Congress) Losie Dikho, Congress’ rebel MLA T. Shyamkumar who won from Andro.

The Bharatiya Janata Party government replaces the Congress rule which lasted 15 years.

The invitation to form government was sent to the BJP despite opposition from the Congress which too had staked claim. The party's claim was ignored because four member each of the NPP and the NPF and one member each of Trinamool , Congress, Ram Vilas Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party besides one independents extended support to the BJP.

With their support the BJP strength has increased to 33 in a 60-member House. Only 21 BJP members were elected to the assembly in recent polls.
