Mukhtar Ansari leaves Punjab for UP's Banda jail; his wife files petition in SC to ensure safety

New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh Police on Tuesday took custody of jailed gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari at Punjab's Rupnagar jail to transfer him to Banda prison. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mukhtar Ansari's wife Afshan Ansari filed a petition in the Supreme Court on Tuesday (April 6) seeking protection for her husband.
Mukhtar Ansari's wife in her petition stated that her husband is in danger of being killed in an encounter.
The petition said the BSP leader could be killed while being taken to Banda jail or while in jail. The petition also demanded that BSP leader should be given security.

According to sources, Mukhtar Ansari is suppose to leave Banda police Rupnagar jail from Ropar and reach Banda from Chhola Road via Eastern Peripheral Expressway via Sonepat.
The team that was sent to Ropar jail in Punjab comprised young, flamboyant and experienced officers.
As per the sources, the police team included a deputy SP rank officer, two inspectors, six sub-inspectors, 20 head constables, 30 constables, one unit of PAC and an ambulance.
The team was equipped with specialised weapons and bulletproof jackets. Mukhtar Ansari will be taken back in a GPS-enabled Vajra Vahan, an anti-riot vehicle.
However, it was ensured that the police team shouldn't have any cop from Purvanchal as the don enjoys dominance in that chain of the state. Also, the mobile phones of most cops were taken before the team's movement from Banda in Uttar Pradesh.
The UP Police took three different routes to reach Ropar jail.
Mukhtar Ansari hails from Ghazipur district and is a history-sheeter from Mehmoodabad police station with 52 cases in his name. Ansari, who has been lodged in the Rupnagar jail since January 2019 in connection with an extortion case, was taken in an ambulance.
