Manipur's oldest rebel group UNLF shuns violence, signs peace agreement with Centre
The central government extended the ban on a total of five militant groups on November 13 this year including Manipur's UNLF, by five years. Besides, five other extremist groups were also banned for five years.
Manipur's oldest rebel armed group United National Liberation Front (UNLF) signed a peace accord in Delhi on Wednesday. This group has agreed to give up violence and join the mainstream. UNLF took this decision after the central government extended the ban imposed on the group several years ago by five years.
The central government extended the ban on a total of five militant groups on November 13 this year including Manipur's UNLF, by five years. Besides, five other extremist groups were also banned for five years.
This ban was imposed due to their anti-national activities and deadly attacks on security forces. These groups are active in Manipur.
Extremism was started in Manipur with the support of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) in 1964.
The central government several years ago banned the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), the People's Liberation Front (PLA) and its political wing, the People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleypak (PREPAK) and its armed forces, the Kangleypak Communist Party (KPC) and the Red Army, KYKL was banned.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah shared this information on social media account. He wrote "A new chapter has been added to the efforts of Modi government to establish peace in the North-East. I welcome them into the democratic process. I also wish him all the best for his journey on the path of peace and progress."
