Ahmedabad: The Gujarat assembly on Friday passed The Gujarat Preservation (Amendment) bill which will award life term to those involved in cow slaughter activity in the state.

The minimum sentence will be 10 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5 lakh.

Earlier, the punishment for cow slaughter was seven-year jail term.

“During this auspicious occasion of Chhetri Navratri, the government, on suggestions of several sadhu-sants, has made amendments to the Gujarat Animal Protection (Amendment) Act, 2011. This is the harshest law in the country,” said minister of state for home Pradeepsinh Jadeja.

The big decision came months before the Gujarat assembly elections. Terming the same as politically motovated decision, Congress said Bharatiya Janata Party is not concerned about cows and did the same for the votes.
