Srinagar: The six terrorists, who kidnapped and assassinated the young Kashmiri Army officer Ummer Fayaz in Shopian district of the Valley when he was on leave to attend a family wedding, have been identified, said a defence source on Thursday.

The militants belong to terror outfits like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Hizbul Mujahideen.

The security forces have launched a massive manhunt to nab the terrorists who abducted and shot dead the 22-year-old Ummer Fayaz on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day on Thursday, the Jammu and Kashmir police officials said that the terrorists might have used the INSAS rifle snatched from cops. They said so as they had recovered two empty cartridges of an INSAS rifle at the location where Fayaz was killed by the militants in Shopian.

Speaking over the incident, Inspector General of Police Kashmir SJM Gillani had said, "We had two incidents of weapon-snatching in south Kashmir recently. We have leads that the Kulgam snatching was carried out by Lashkar terrorists while Hizb terrorists were involved in weapon-snatching at Shopian court complex on May 2. So it could be one of those weapons."

It may be mentioned that Fayaz was on leave to attend the wedding of the daughter of his maternal uncle at Batapura, around 74 kilometers from Srinagar. Finding him unarmed, the terrorists abducted him from there at around 10 pm on Tuesday. On the next morning, his bullet-ridden body was recovered.

On his first leave since joining the Army, he had reached Batapura from Akhnoor in Jammu region where he was posted with 2 Rajputana Rifles. Fayaz, who hailed from Kulgam district, was commissioned in the Army in December 2016.

The Indian Army has pledged to bring the perpetrators of this heinous act of terror to justice.
