Know what is Aruna Shanbaug case? Why is it being discussed after Kolkata rape and murder case

Whatever brutality happened with the trainee doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital on the night of 8-9 August, it once again brought alive in everyone's mind the incident of 27 November 1973, which shook the whole country. Whatever brutality happened with Kolkata's daughter inside the hospital the same had happened about 51 years ago in Mumbai's King Edward Memorial Hospital. The only difference is that now the target was a doctor, who died. Then the victim of brutality was a nurse, who did not die but remained a living corpse for 42 years. The Supreme Court also expressed concern about the safety of women doctors and gave the example of the Aruna Shanbag case.

This is the story of a nurse named Aruna Shanbag, who was not only raped by a ward boy named Sohanlal Balmiki inside the hospital, but also crossed the limits of brutality, due to which Aruna remained alive, but like a corpse. After the rape, the ward boy strangled the nurse with a dog chain due to the fear of getting caught. He thought that his story ended at that very moment, now the truth will not be revealed to anyone. But she was alive. It would not be wrong to call it unfortunate because even after suffering so much brutality and pain not only physically but also mentally, nurse Aruna survived but she went into a coma. She remained a living corpse for 42 years.

Who knows how many people reached the court with the plea of euthanasia for Aruna. But the court refused to grant her euthanasia. In 2011, the Supreme Court said that a rape victim cannot be allowed to do this, she has to live. Before giving its verdict, the court also got Aruna's medical checkup done. After which the court argued that it is difficult to know what she herself wants, but her behavior with the staff shows that she wants to live. She still has love for life. After suffering mental and physical pain for 42 years, in 2015, she finally went to the same place for which the court was requesting for her.

Nurse Aruna, who was a victim of the same brutality as the Kolkata doctor about 51 years ago in a Mumbai hospital, was about to get married to a doctor from the same hospital. But destiny had something else in store. Just 1 month before the marriage, something happened to Aruna Shanbaug that no one had imagined. She was not only raped, but an attempt was also made to kill her by strangulating her with a dog chain. But she did not even get the chance to die.

The surprising thing in the Mumbai rape case was that the person who did this brutality with the nurse had to serve only 7 years of sentence. He came out of jail in 1980 and started working again in another hospital by changing his name and identity. However, the accused Sohanlal expressed regret for his act in an interview and said that he regrets whatever he did with nurse Aruna. He also asks for forgiveness from God. He had a daughter who died. He did wrong to her and God punished him for it.
