Pathankot: After 17 months of the appalling Kathua rape case, the District and Sessions Court of Pathankot has awarded three accused life-term while three accused policemen were sentenced 5 years jail and slapped with a fine each, in the horrific gang rape and-murder case of an eight-year-old girl, Asifa in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua.

The crime branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police had filed the charge-sheet against eight accused, including a juvenile. The seventh accused, Vishal, who is the son of main accused Sanji Ram, was acquitted as he was a minor.

Sanji Ram, the caretaker of the temple where the crime took place, Special Police Officer Deepak Khajuria and Parvesh Kumar, a civilian, have been convicted under Ranbir Penal Code sections pertaining to criminal conspiracy, murder, gangrape and destruction of evidence, the lawyers said.

The accused were awarded life sentence under Section U/S- 120B, 302, 376.

According to the 15-page charge sheet, the eight-year-old girl, who was kidnapped on January 10 last year, was allegedly raped in captivity in a small village temple in Kathua district after having been kept sedated for four days before she was bludgeoned to death.
