Palamu: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his visit to Jharkhand has laid the foundation of several irrigation projects, on December 5.

Rs 2,391.36 crore Mandal dam is one of the projects that will ensure the irrigation to 19,604-hectare area in Palamu and Garhwa districts.

What is North Koel Project?

-North Koel River flows through the Jharkhand. The North Koel rises on the Ranchi plateau and enters Latehar district, below Netarhat near Rud.

- The North Koel project is being implemented at Mandal near Kutku.

- The project has a 64.82-meter (212.7 ft) high dam, from which water will be released for picking up by the Mohammadganj Barrage and Indrapuri Barrage.

- This Hydro-electric dam will be known as Mandal Dam and its power generation would be 2 x 12 MW.

- This project would flood 56 villages, out of which 8 are within the core area of the Palamau Tiger Reserve.

- In 1974, this project was started promising to irrigate 120,000 hectares (300,000 acres) of farmlands of Palamu, Latehar, Garhwa of Jharkhand as well as of Gaya, Aurangabad, Jehanabad and Arawal of neighboring Bihar.

-Mandal Dam’s work has been blocked since 1993, but now, it will be built on the North Koel River in Barwadih, block of Latehar district.
