India became member of ECOSOC:

India has become a member of the Commission on Status of Women of the United Nations, the organization of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), defeating China. This information has been given by TS Tirumurthy, India's permanent representative to the United Nations.

TS Tirumurthy pointed out that India has won a seat in the prestigious ECOSOC body. India has been elected a member of the Commission on Status of Women (CSW). She said that this is an important support of our commitment to promote gender equality and women empowerment in all our endeavors. We thank the member states for their support.

India and Afghanistan won the poll:

India, Afghanistan and China contested for the Commission on Status of Women. In this, India and Afghanistan won the election with 54 members, while there was a severe defeat of China. China could not get even half the votes.

Significantly, this year marks the 25th anniversary of the Beijing World Conference on Women (1995). On this occasion, China has suffered a severe setback and has lost to India. With this, India will now be a member of the Commission on Status of Women for four years. From 2021 to 2025, India has become a member of the United Nations Commission on Status of Women.
