Srinagar: In order to encourage better higher education in the state of Jammu and Kashmir the Central Government has decided to gift the state the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) campus. The campus will be operational from the current academic session.

The Union Cabinet led by Narendra Modi on Thursday gave approval for the establishment of the IIM in Jammu from the current academic session as part of the Prime Minister’s development package for the State of Jammu and Kashmir. The campus will be set up on a temporary basis at the Old Government College of Engineering and Technology from the academic year of 2016-17 and an out-campus will be set up in the Kashmir region later.

“Steps would be taken for setting up the campus at Jammu and an out-campus in Kashmir region. The detailed project report for the permanent campuses is under preparation and thereafter the process for setting up of the campuses would start,” a statement from the HRD ministry said. “This is a part of Prime Minister’s development package for Jammu and Kashmir,” stated the official statement.

The ministry officials said that the cabinet also approved the formation of an IIM Jammu Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. “The society will manage the functioning of the IIM in the state and it will be headed by the Board of Governors,” said officials.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 61.90 crore on temporary campus for the four years from 2016 to 2020. The student intake would be 54 for the current year and are expected to reach to 120 in year 2020.

At present, there are 19 IIMs in the country with the recent campuses established in 2015, located in Amritsar, Sirmaur, Nagpur, Bodhgaya, Sambalpur and Vishakhapatnam.
