New Delhi: The flood situation in Bihar and Assam still remains critical. The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains in Bihar and in such a situation the flood crisis from Gopalganj to Katihar in North Bihar is expected to deepen. Seven rivers in North Bihar are flowing above the danger mark and more than one million people are affected by the floods.

More than 2.5 million people may be affected by floods when the water level in rivers rises. Meanwhile, 22 out of 33 districts of Assam are affected by floods and so far 129 people have died due to floods and landslides.

Heavy Rain till August 1:

The Indian Meteorological Department has released forecast of heavy rain till August 1 in Nepal and North Bihar. Due to the rains, the problems of people already facing the floods in North Bihar will increase further. The embankments at two dozen places are under heavy pressure due to the rise of seven rivers in North Bihar and there is a danger of their breaking.

The Water Resources Department has directed all the districts to make necessary preparations in view of the possibility of heavy rains.

Flood situation in Assam:

In various districts of North Bihar, the population of about 10 lakhs is badly affected by the floods. A large number of people have taken shelter in embankments and roads to save their lives. Experts say that due to heavy rains, the water level of the rivers will increase. In such a situation, the number of people affected by floods can reach 25 lakhs.

There has been a slight improvement in the flood situation in Assam. Lakhs of people in 22 districts out of 33 of the state are still affected by the floods. According to the bulletin issued by Assam State Disaster Management Authority, so far 103 people have died in the floods. Also, 26 people have died due to landslides.
