Northwest and central India recorded the highest average maximum temperatures in April since 1900, the weather office said on Saturday (April 30, 2022). As various parts of the country reels under searing heatwave conditions, Maharashtra's Chandrapur recorded a maximum temperature of 46.6 degrees Celsius yesterday, which was the highest in the state, PTI reported.

According to IMD's data, many other cities also broiled under temperatures as high as 44 degrees Celsius. In Maharashtra, Brahmpuri recorded a maximum temperature of 46.3 degrees Celsius while Akola witnessed 45.5 degrees Celsius with Wardha at 45, Nagpur at 44.6, Godia at 44.5, Amravati at 44.2, Yavatmal at 44, Gadchiroli at 42.8, and Buldhana at 42 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

On Saturday, the highest temperature in Rajasthan was recorded in Ganganagar where the mercury reached 46 degrees Celsius. Temperature at the other parts of the state- Jaisalmer at 45.9, Pilani at 45.7, Phalodi at 45.6, and Churu at 45.5 degrees Celsius. A total of nine regions in Rajasthan recorded a temperature above 44 degrees Celsius.

On the other hand, the heart of India recorded the highest maximum temperature of 45.4 degrees Celsius in Khajuraho. Other cities like Nowgong touched 45 degrees, Gwalior reached 44.5 degrees.

Jhansi recorded the highest maximum temperature of 45.2 degrees in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, followed by Aligarh at 44.2 and Orai at 44 degrees Celsius.

The national capital recorded a maximum temperature of 43 degrees Celsius yesterday.

In the southern state, Adilabad recorded the highest maximum temperature of 44.3 degrees Celsius, followed by Ramgumdam at 44.2 degrees Celsius and Nizamabad at 44.0 degrees Celsius.

Other states

As the searing heatwave continues to stretch over India, IMD has issued Orange and Yellow alerts in parts of West and East India. In several parts of the country including, Haryana, Gujarat, Bihar and West Bengal, the maximum temperatures remained between 42-45 degrees Celsius.

Hottest April in 122 years for NW, central India

Northwest and central India experienced their hottest April in 122 years with average maximum temperatures reaching 35.9 and 37.78 degrees Celsius respectively, the weather office said on Saturday. Addressing a press conference, IMD's Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said northwest and west central parts of the country - Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana - will continue to experience above normal temperatures in May as well.
