New Delhi: The Central government appointed Karnal Singh, an IPS officer from 1984 batch, as Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Singh was posted as Special Director, ED, for the northern region and has already been holding the post of director as an additional charge for over a year.

The appointment order of Singh was issued on Wednesday by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by PM Narendra Modi.

It may be mentioned that the post of ED was being run on additional charge for more than two years. Rajan Katoch, IAS, was earlier holding the charge which was assigned to Singh as an additional charge in August 2015.

“The ACC has approved the appointment of Karnal Singh, IPS, 1984 batch of AGMUT cadre, as Director, ED till August 31, 2017, the date of his superannuation or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” the order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training stated.

Singh, who is considered close aide to the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, was appointed by the Gujarat High Court to probe the fake encounter of Ishrat Jahan and three others in year 2012 and 2013. He, however, had opted out of the Special Investigation Team, which was probing the high-profile case due to some personal reasons.
